S C U L P T U R A L   P U P P E T R Y : combining the line and form of sculpture with the playful anima of puppetry. People were always asking me what to call my work. Trying to figure this out …  this was what I came up with. It fits quite beautifully.
The bodies are built over a wire armature using polymer clay and fibre construction. This is designed to allow motion during and to some degree after the figure is created. It is an inventive process that is both delicate and strong.

In 2008 I had a solo show at the Mary E. Black Gallery of fine craft in Halifax Nova Scotia called Balance Point: 20 years of making. During the creation of this show friends were invloved in a project with Doc Fest, learning to create videos and were on assignment to make a short film about someone they knew and respected. I was the subject of two films during that time and they truly capture me in my world, one in my studio on the Old Clearland Road and the other was filmed in the gallery during the show.

Each film holds this time and captured my thoughts and feelings about my work.

The first one is on the page “ABOUT” and the second one is a 15 minute film that my friend Reid Campbell created of this exhibit of a smattering of 20 years of my work. It opens with my earliest piece and moves through time (which is how I staged the exhibit) to the then recent work. He thought of and created the idea for the film, did the filming and editing and most importantly wrote the music that accompanies this time in my life.

It has been ten years since this show, I have had two rounds of cancer. The hardest thing is realizing the loss of time. Each time climbing out of the wreckage of having disease removed and the recovery. It is something that I am deeply respectful of.

I give the most applause to my body and the wonderful doctors and nurses who work in the cancer and emergency centers. They are amazing.
